Day 17

Wednesday the Twenty-Fourth of June, Two Thousand Ten

Hello again friends,
Today was a draining day, as extensive travel so often is. I awoke early in the morning to make reservations at a hostel for our next five nights: not having the insurance of a roof over one's head is enough to make anyone frantic. Thankfully, though, we were able to find lodging, as I said, in the University of Westminster dorms in the neighborhood of Highgate, somewhat removed from London centre, but still easily gotten to and from. Becky and the baby saw us off at the station, whereupon we rode the hour and some-odd time into London. At Marylebone station where the train drops off, we had the unfortunate task of changing lines, which is simple in theory, but more complicated with heavy bags and no lifts (or elevators, for you Americans out there). I was sure my arm was ready to drop off by the time were were seated on the Northern Line.

The rooms are small and the bathrooms shared, here at the dorm, but I do not get the impression there are many people staying here currently, so it is rather quiet. Hot, tired, sore, Diana and I proceeded to the nearest eating establishment for lunch after dropping our bags off. Many glasses of water later, we were ready to explore. Rather randomly, we decided to go walk around the Notting Hill area. Complaining on the way about the conspicuous lack of smoothie establishments, what should we find as we walked out of the Tube but a smoothie shop! It was a magical coincidence, Diana claimed, as the ice cream machine at McDonald's on the way was broken. The Universe, she says, wanted us to have smoothies. We strolled, smoothies in hand, for an hour or two. As it was already late in the day, though, it was not long before it was dinnertime, which we passed pleasantly at a little Japanese restaurant.

Back at our lodging, where Diana and I are next door to one another in single rooms, we spent the evening catching up on emails, blog-writing (me), skype-ing (her) until it was quite late.
