Sunday morning we awoke perhaps too early to eat breakfast in town at what is (debatably) the oldest café in Oxford, Queens Lane Café. We then walked up through town to the Natural History Museum there. Funny, what looks like such a great distance on a map of, say, London, takes really only a short time in Oxford. Despite some claims of its small size, the museum had more than enough to keep me enthralled for a day at least. We did not, however, have a day—only a few hours in which to explore. We did not make it upstairs, nor to the acclaimed Pitt-Rivers Archaeological Museum. Alas—it must wait until I return to Oxford.
I say we only had a few hours because Zoe and James were hosting a barbeque for their friends and sensei from Jitsu class and had invited us. Luckily, the gray and chilly weather had vanished. The favourable weather was received with much rejoicing. My sister and I made a summer salad. There was much basking.
Late afternoon and Diana and I made our plans for the following two days while the other guests practiced hand-to-hand combat with one another in the backyard. After dark, Zoe, Diana and I went to a local pub, where we were joined by James and his friend. It was a very British sort of night.
Tomorrow, we leave for Banbury. More on that later.
Yours,
A
